Self-directed learning |
Learning alone, being isolated from everybody, and buried under loads of books is probably the worst way to acquire knowledge. But it does not have to be the norm! When you get acquainted with the topic of self-organized learning you will soon realize that learning is only half as frightening as you have thought it to be. With some background knowledge you can manage to create your personal learning schedule and facilitate your learning process. What exactly is learning? Learning is:
Self-directed learning means to qualify on one's own account. It includes the acquisition of new information, the education of oneself further. The information has to be edited by the learner in a way that they understand and keep in mind. The learning content has to be presented in easy comprehensible units and structured logically. The AHA-effect is stimulated when rules and coherences are recognized and connections between known and unknown information are created. Consequently the motivation increases. Special emphasis has to be put on clarity and concreteness, since not fully understood information is forgotten within hours. It is also very important to become aware of one's own learning type. A visual type of learner acquires information via seeing, whereas an acoustic type of learner acquires most information via hearing. A motor type acquires information via reading and writing. Once you have discovered that you are a motor type, you will probably make faster progress by writing words down instead of speaking them out loud. You should avoid hunger, thirst, noise, a full belly, sleepiness and backache, since these conditions affect the learning process negatively. In order to abreact tension you should exercise daily. This is not only healthy but also increases your concentration crucially. Of course you have to allow yourself sufficient rests in order to gain power and not to collapse. Have you ever consciously thought about adapting the periods of learning to your diurnal rhythm? It is another essential prerequisite for successful results. The owl type, for instance, prefers the evening and maybe even the night to learn. Whereas the lark type is in best learning-shape in the morning. Take in a positive attitude towards the specific learning task. Of course, this is easier said than done. But give it a try-during the next learning marathon. |
